The Data Lab MSc - Programme

Welcome to The Data Lab MSc. We hope you have a great year!

The documents in this page outline your responsibilities as a Data Lab student, and provide guidance about the activities you will undertake throughout the year.

The Data Lab MSc programme 2020/21

The Data Lab MSc differs from other academic courses as it focuses on applying academic knowledge to the world of industry and developing non-technical skills that are essential to becoming a data scientist. Our programme allows you to take the skills you learn in the classroom to solve real life organisational problems and challenges.  This is achieved through events and training throughout the programme, carefully designed with academic and industry input.

For 2020-21, in response to covid-19 restrictions, our programme will be the most flexible yet, with the core-elements of the programme delivered on-line, and the timetable flexed to accommodate those students who will commence courses in January 2021.  The core elements are:

  • The Data Lab MSc Launch Event
  • The Skills and Employability Training
  • At least one collider event with an opportunity to meet potential employers and experts in the data community in Scotland
  • MOOC: Data Ethics and Responsible Innovation
  • The Innovation Challenge
  • The Closing Event

These core events are compulsory and will be spread over the year taking account of the pattern of your academic study.  We are also planning other events, covering current data issues, networking with data experts and sector specific webinars, which may be optional. We will make clear when an event is optional or core.  Your course leaders have agreed to your attendance and you will be excused from your academic classes if required.  In order to obtain a certificate of completion on the Data Lab MSc programme you are required to attend all core events (unless by explicit agreement with TDL under special circumstances).

Here is a timetable of events for the year, although this may be subject to change.

If you are not able to attend an event, please complete The Data Lab MSc 2020-21 Absence form.

We are committed to supporting all students to fully participate in The Data Lab MSc programme. If you have any additional support requirements or disabilities, please let us know so that we can offer you assistance.

Please read these documents carefully, as they provide guidance on your rights and responsibilities as part of The Data Lab MSc
