This is an exciting time to learn about Data Science
This is a great time to be a student in Data Science or AI. We are generating a truly mind-boggling amount of data daily, at a pace that is only expected to accelerate with the growth of the Internet of Things (system of interrelated computing devices that transfer data over a network like, for example, wearables or smart devices). About 90% of all the data in the world today was generated in just the last 2 years.
The entire digital universe is expected to reach 44 zettabytes by 2020 (a zettabyte is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes). If this number is correct, it will mean there are 40 times more bytes than there are stars in the observable universe.
Data can help solve problems
Data and information have become the key resources in a wide range of industries.
The importance of collecting and interpreting data to draw insights and solve problems around us is becoming apparent in all industries. Data has been called “the oil of the digital economy” because of its immense potential to drive decisions and bring benefits.
That is why data is so important to all organisations, and at all levels. It’s not just big IT and software companies: data experts are needed in banking and finance, automotive, energy, healthcare, transport, retail, and virtually every domain you can think of.
Data Science uses maths and programming to process data and extract meaningful patterns or observations and then communicate this in the form of data visualization or model building.
Even if you don’t want to be a data scientist, understanding Data Science and how it can affect our daily lives is just as important. It’s a way of problem solving and thinking which can be used in everyday life.
