Women in Data Science – Calling on Scottish School Girls!

Women in Data Science Conference

The Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference aims to inspire and educate data scientists, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. The WiDS Conference will be held on February 3, 2017 at Stanford University, and will be streamed live. This one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science related research in a number of domains, learn how leading-edge companies are leveraging data science for success, and connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and others in the field.

There will also be various “Women in Data Science” events taking place across the world in February 2017; in collaboration with Stanford University. The Data Lab is happy to host the Edinburgh session over afternoon tea on 15 February 2017.

To join our afternoon tea event, please register here.

School Girls Competition

We would like to welcome some “Women Data Scientists in the Making” from schools across Scotland to our event. As we have limited capacity, we will be running a competition open to all schools in Scotland, and the girls from the winning class will be invited to attend the afternoon tea event, where they will hear from successful and inspiring women in the field of Data Science.

To participate, each class must submit their best idea of “How the world will look in 20 years, thanks to data and technology”. To understand more about Data Science, have a look at our What is Data Science page.

Submissions can be made in the form of a drawing/illustration, a video (max. 2 minutes), or simply a short essay summarising the class girls’ ideas (max 1000 words).

The winning class will be invited to attend the afternoon tea event, interact with potential mentors, and present their ideas to the audience. This competition is open both to primary and secondary school students. The maximum capacity for this event is 25 students.

To participate, the class leader (teacher or parent) must submit the class’ entry to by 5pm on Friday 3rd February 2017.

If you have a daughter, niece, or know any school girls that might be interested in hearing from inspiring women in Data Science, please share the competition flyer with them or their school.
