Monthly talk: Don’t talk to me about ethics!
May 29 @ 6:15 pm - 8:15 pm
Brian Hills will talk about practical ethics.
Title: Don’t talk to me about ethics!
Over the past two years there has been a rapid increase in the awareness of data ethics followed by significant investment in ethical institutes around the world and prestigious boards created by global brands. Nevertheless, most practitioners building and releasing data products today have yet to evolve their approach. Many conversations I’ve had with data scientists conclude quickly with “Don’t talk to me about ethics!”
In this talk, Brian will propose why the data community needs to take ownership and action now, explores the challenges to adoption and suggests how to get started.
Brian is the Head of Data at The Data Lab, Scotland’s Innovation Centre for data, created to deliver significant social and economic benefit to Scotland though the application of data science. He is responsible for technical leadership and the skills portfolio at The Data Lab and has experience in analytics and software engineering across a range of industries including Skyscanner (E-Commerce), Sumerian (IT) and Hewlett Packard (Telecoms). Brian was recognised in the 2017 Information Age Top 50 Data Leaders in the UK, winning a best in class award for his contribution to data science and analytics.
Drinks and pizzas will be provided.
