Is Scotland’s Historic Environment Data Fit for the Future?

March 11

Across Scotland there are many organisations that hold information relating to Scotland’s historic places. The challenge is to make that data more readily accessible, and to make it easy to read across from one source to another. The SHED (Scotland’s Historic Environment Data) Strategy is a collaborative undertaking that us seeking to tackle these problems. It is a partnership between Historic Environment Scotland, local authorities, museums, archives, libraries and other bodies that hold information about the historic environment.

This event will reflect on how much work has been done to allow us to access, use and celebrate the huge range of data about Scotland’s past which is available to us all. Together with work on developing a Spatial Data Infrastructure for Scotland’s heritage, there is much to share and we want to do this by showing how data can help us all work more efficiently .

We’re planning to have talks from heritage experts and technical partners describing how data has been made more accessible and the opportunities that have arisen.

The event will finish with a facilitated discussion on Open Data and the benefits and challenges that the move to a more open system brings in a sector such as ours, which is made up of national government, local authorities, the third and commercial sectors and where we are all at a different stage on the journey to Open Data.

The event is taking place at HES, John Sinclair House, 16 Bernard Terrace, Edinburgh, EH8 9NX. It’s open to a maximum of thirty people and we would welcome attendance from anyone with an interest in heritage and data.
Please be aware that photography and filming may take place during the event. The photos and video may be used to promote future events on the DataFest and / or The Data Lab websites and social media channels and on digital and/or print/promotional materials.

If you do not wish to be included, please let the event organiser know on the day and we will give you an identifier so the photographers / videographers know not to include you.
