“The software now has eyes!” delivered by William Alexander Technical Director Optronics, Thales UK

The last decade has seen huge advances in image processing, which are at the vanguard of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution. We are moving into an era where products are able to be designed that, using electro-optic sensors, can “look” at the world and know what they are looking at - “the software now has eyes!” The technology is reviewed and examples are given from both within and outside of Thales. The potential impact of this technology beyond the mere engineering is discussed – for example enabling widespread autonomy. Indeed it is speculated that any human activity involving the interpretation of visual data is now a candidate for automation. While many might view this with trepidation it is the proposition of this lecture that the opportunities afforded by this technology to the agile and innovative are fantastic.
