Work in education and deal with data? Are you a tired administrator with a pile of spreadsheets to deal with? Perhaps thinking about teaching data science soon, or just interested in how to deal with data more easily and effectively than is possible using spreadsheets? Do you want to see how easy it is to produce high quality figures and graphs in the R language?
CodeClan, the digital skills academy, is running a short workshop called DataSchool, introducing data science for interested beginners! Our data instructors will use a data set relevant to schools and show you how to:
- import your data from various files into R
- ‘wrangle’ your data: that is, clean it and get it ready for analysis
- do some simple statistics like averages and spread
- effortlessly produce high quality graphs and figures
Nevil Hopley, Head of Mathematics at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh, will also be presenting on his use of data visualisation in a secondary school.
We start from the basics, so don’t worry if you haven’t done much coding before. Bring your own laptop (we’ll tell you what to install), or CodeClan can provide one for the workshop.
Drinks and nibbles provided.
Please be aware that photography and filming may take place during the event and may be used to promote future events on the DataFest and/or The Data Lab websites and social media channels and on digital and/or print/promotional materials.
If you do not wish to be included, please let the event organiser know on the day and we will give you an identifier so the photographers/videographers know not to include you.
