Cancelled – A celebration of online learning and data science skills for all

March 18 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Our event is a celebration of the development of quantitative and coding skills across life-long learners from schools and universities through professional sectors. We are launching the online learning platform and course Data Science for Ecologists and Environmental Scientists. And we hope you can join the celebration! There will be refreshments and food and a chance to network with event participants. All are welcome.

Time, Venue and Location: 18:00 to 20:00 at the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI), Edinburgh, Scotland

Target audience size: 50 participants

Audience:

Our event is for anyone interested in the topic of the development of quantitative and coding skills either as a learner or as an instructor, regardless of discipline. Through our initiative, we hope to inspire and engage future data scientists in the fields of ecology, environmental science and beyond across Scotland and around the world. Come to hear about the Coding Club initiative and our online learning platform and course and meet learners and trainers of data scientists in Edinburgh and around Scotland.

About Coding Club:
https://ourcodingclub.github.io/

Coding Club is a peer-to-peer initiative developing quantitative skills, particularly statistics and programming, trying to overcome “code fear” and “statistics anxiety”. We have been organising workshops and designing online tutorials focusing on using R, Python, Stan, JavaScript and the Google Earth Engine and more. All of our teaching materials are freely available online and through GitHub (https://ourcodingclub.github.io/). In 2020, we launched the online learning platform and course Data Science for Ecologists and Environmental Scientists (https://ourcodingclub.github.io/course_promo/).

About Data Science for Ecologists and Environmental Scientists:
https://ourcodingclub.github.io/course/

Our course is an online learning initiative for anyone wanting to gain data science skills in the programming language R, with additional content in Python and JavaScript. Our motivation is to overcome “code fear” and “statistics anxiety” in learners of all ages and from all walks of life. This course is developed for international audiences, but is also uniquely Scottish with real-world data to put quantitative skills into the context of key ecological questions. The three course themes introduce learners to key elements of data science – ‘Stats from Scratch’, ‘Wiz of Data Vis’ and ‘Mastering Modelling’. The fifteen individual tutorials that make up the course in addition to the further 25 tutorials hosted by Coding Club allow learners to create their own bespoke learning pathway to gaining key skill sets. Quizzes and challenges test knowledge, but also allow users to join a larger community of learners and gain confidence in their own skills. Join the hundreds of thousands of Coding Club users and develop your data science skills through this entirely free and engaging online learning initiative!
